Swimming Holes USA is a directory of natural swimming places across the United States — springs, rivers, creeks, waterfall plunge pools, lakes, quarries, and ocean coves. Our goal is simple: help you find real water worth swimming in, with the practical details that listicles skip — fees, reservations, access, and safety.

How we research listings

Every listing starts from public sources: state and national park systems, tourism boards, established outdoor guides, and community knowledge. We cross-check names, locations, and access details across sources before a spot is published, and we map every spot to coordinates so you can actually find it. When sources disagree or a detail can't be confirmed, we say so on the page rather than guessing.

What our labels mean

Each listing carries a confidence label. High-confidence spots are confirmed across multiple independent sources. Community-reported spots come from a single source — they're included because the water is real, but details deserve an extra check before you visit. Every page also shows a "Last verified" date so you can see how fresh the information is.

How we handle dangerous locations

Some beautiful places should not be swum in. Spots where swimming is prohibited or known to be life-threatening — like Tamolitch Blue Pool in Oregon or Linville Falls in North Carolina — are published with a red "viewing only" banner and listed for reference only. Spots where authorities discourage swimming, or where currents, submerged hazards, or flash-flood risk are documented, carry an amber caution banner. We would rather warn you off a swim than send you somewhere unsafe.

Verify before you go

Natural places change. Floods reshape rivers, parks add reservation systems, fees go up, access closes. We stamp every page with its last-verified date and re-check listings on a regular cycle, but conditions on the ground are what matter — always confirm with the official park or agency link on the listing before heading out.

Safety

Natural water is not a pool. There are no lifeguards at most of these spots. Cold water, currents, submerged rocks, and flash floods injure people every year. Spots flagged as dangerous are listed for reference only — do not swim where swimming is prohibited.
